Robert Schumann
First and Early Editions
Here, the first and early editions of works by Robert Schumann have been made digitally accessible for the first time, a collection consisting of 8,176 individual sheets. With 128 first or early editions, the Brahms-Institut owns over 80 percent of Schumann’s works. With the support of the Federal State of Schleswig-Holstein, Sparkassenstiftung Lübeck, and the Friends' Association, the first editions and early editions could be digitized and indexed in a two-year project.
The work was based on the Schumann-Werkverzeichnis by Margrit L. McCorkle, published in 2003 as part of the Neue Gesamtausgabe at G. Henle Verlag in Munich. The Schumann project shows the range of the collection, that goes far beyond the work of Johannes Brahms. The digitized material includes several examples with written dedications by Schumann and written indications of ownership, including some by Clara Schumann. A large portion of the prints came from the estate of Brahms friend Theodor Kirchner.
